Cozy’s Take: On Learning to Be Myself

It’s no surprise that I was born a curly girl. But what you may find surprising is that I spent most of my childhood trying to brush my curls out underneath the heat of any iron that would work. I wanted my hair to be straight more than anything. Why? For some reason, young me was embarrassed by my curls, and I wanted so badly to just look like everyone else.

It wasn’t until I was an adult that I finally embraced my curly hair. It took me a long time to realize that it’s part of what makes me, ME.

Over the past 21 years, I’ve seen countless little clients walk through the door of my salons. And lucky enough for me, I’ve even been able to watch most of them grow up. But what is equally as special as watching them become their own person, is the look on their face after the chair spins around for the final look. You can tell by the expression on their face, the genuine admiration they have in that moment, for themselves. We all have this unique connection to our hair, it’s really one of the first ways we learn to express ourselves. Being able to see that play out, every day, right in my salon is the reason why they’ve become some of my favorite memories.

As a mother, it’s one of the most important lessons I taught my kids: embrace all the things that make you unique – hair included. And as a business owner, it’s important for me to provide a space and a line of products that help kids embrace exactly who they are.

“Being you is our idea of cool,” is our motto, but it’s also our mission. There’s no one way to look, no one way to be cool, and no one who can be you but YOU. If we can put tools and inspiration in the hands of kids to feel empowered and proud of who they are, then we’ve done our job. And it’s why we support brands like Generation Kind too.

I can’t go back in time to embrace my little girl curls, but I’m proud to work toward a better future where all kids feel comfortable and confident being their own kind of “cool.” I hope you’ll join me.
