Does Coconut Oil Repel Lice?
When it comes to lice prevention, I’ve done a lot of homework. And I mean, a LOT. Creating an effective lice prevention that was also safe, natural and free of dangerous chemicals was my top priority with the SoCozy BOO! products. So, I have a few thoughts when it comes to this coconut oil claim.
To begin with, coconut oil is considered a natural oil and that’s a good thing. But just because it’s natural, doesn’t mean it is necessarily the best. Coconut oil itself doesn’t prevent lice, but oil on a hair shaft does make it harder for those little eggs (called nits) to stick. However, it can also make hair look and feel greasy.
Coconut oil is also considered a tree nut by the FDA and could be a potential allergen to kids. At SoCozy, we’ve worked hard to ensure that our products are absolutely 100% nut free, and do not contain any of the most common allergens for kids including parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic color, formaldehyde, propylene glycol, gluten, wheat, peanuts and tree nuts. We’ve got the best of both worlds when it comes to coconut because our products include coconut derived ingredients, but they do not contain actual coconut oil. This allows us to focus on clean, non-toxic formulas that are safe for kids and give parents peace of mind.
And when it comes to lice, we’ve developed a tried and true prevention system to keep your little ones lice free. Our BOO 3-step system includes shampoo, conditioner and spray made with our proprietary blend of natural ingredients like Tea Tree oil, peppermint oil and rosemary that are natural and powerful lice repellents. (They also smell great!) Paired with some practical tips including our simple rhyme “If it touches hair, we don’t share” you truly can avoid being one of the 6-12 million cases of lice each year. It used to be a rite of passage, but not anymore. As we like to say, lice happens but it doesn’t have to happen to you.
So, enjoy coconut oil for cooking or soothing a sunburn. Heck, even use it for a breath freshener, but when it comes to lice, I recommend scaring them away with BOO!
XO,
Cozy
