Hair Care Regime For Kids With Sensitive Scalp

For kids and grown-ups alike, good hair starts with a healthy scalp! If your little one’s scalp is itchy, flaky, or dry, it could be the result of a sensitive scalp. It’s important for every kid to develop a hair care routine that meets their specific needs. For kids with a sensitive scalp, this routine should include gentle and trustworthy products. Here are some tips and tricks to help you get to the “root” of the problem, and make bath time even better.

Signs and Symptoms & Sensitive Scalp

If you’ve ever dealt with snow-like dandruff, you know that it can be hard to rid yourself and/or your child of pesky dry flakes. While dandruff is common among kids, it isn’t the only sign of a sensitive scalp. A sensitive scalp can present through many different symptoms, and could be caused by a variety of different things.

      Symptoms of a sensitive scalp:

      • Inflammation of the scalp
      • Flaky and itchy skin at the hairline
      • Redness or skin irritation
      • Dandruff
      • Dry scalp

So, what causes a sensitive scalp? In many cases, a sensitive scalp can naturally occur in children, and similar to all dry skin on the body, a dry and sensitive scalp is common among kids of all ages. Fortunately, there are a plethora of remedies to help soothe your little one’s scalp.

      Remedies for Sensitive Scalp

When it comes to combating a sensitive scalp, here are three easy and effective ways to help.

      1. Add Moisture From The Inside Out

Adding moisture to the hair starts with a healthy diet, and it is likely no surprise that the best natural moisturizer is water! It’s possible that your kiddo’s skin dryness is a result of dehydration. Before you get to any cleansing products, begin with inside-out hydration. Staying hydrated is the skin’s first natural line of defense against dryness and sensitivity, so make sure your kiddo is drinking lots of water!

      1. Use Products with Natural Ingredients

Oftentimes, the source of our skin sensitivities is the skincare, cleansing and beauty products we use. Look at the label on your kid’s hair care products — parabens, sulfates, and even formaldehyde could be lurking in plain sight. These harmful ingredients are all too common, even in “kid-friendly” products. They can strip away natural oils, and leave the scalp feeling raw and dry.

Choosing hair care products with natural ingredients could help. Essential oils such as tea tree and lavender, soy, kiwi and rosemary extracts, and Vitamin B5 are all excellent examples of natural ingredients that calm sensitivity and provide safe and gentle moisture.

      1. Develop a Consistent, Healthy Hair-Care Routine

Did you know that it’s possible for your kiddo’s hair to be too clean? If you’re washing your little one’s hair every single day, this may also be contributing to their sensitive scalp. Important natural oils build on the scalp over time, and washing too frequently can strip the hair and scalp of its natural oils.

To prevent over-washing, find a consistent hair-care routine that works for you and your little one. 2-3 days between washes (or sometimes longer for curly hair), is the best way to maintain a healthy and balanced scalp. Find the shampoo and conditioner that works best for your kiddo, and begin your clean hair routine!

And for your curly-haired cutie, the hairstyle possibilities are endless! From braids to buns and everything in-between, there are so many adorable curly styles for your little one to rock. Here’s a list of 21 stylish curly hairstyles that have major curl-power.

      1. Gathered bun with bow

Keep it simple and understated with a classic low bun. Gather hair at the base of the neck and secure with an elastic, then loop hair back up through the elastic to create the bun. Use an embellished hair tie, or clip in a bow directly above the elastic.

      Image : Pinterest

      1. 3-section high pony with bow

Begin this look by parting hair into three distinct sections with a comb. Then, with small elastics, secure three high ponies at the top of each section of hair. Clip in a bow at the top of the head for a finishing touch!

      Image : Pinterest

      1. Half-up, half down

For this classic look, gather two small sections of hair on either side of the head and create a partial ponytail just above the ears. Secure with an elastic, scrunchy, or bow!

      Image : Pinterest

      1. Low crown braid

This look will help your little one feel elegant, especially if you’re dressing up for a special occasion! First, create two thin braids on either side of the head. Loop each braid around the back of the head and towards the other side, so they meet in the middle. Use ample bobby pins to secure the braids in place, and you’ll have a braided crown fit for a princess.

      Image : Pinterest

      1. Asymmetrical high buns

For this adorable look, begin by parting hair into two distinct sections with a comb. Gather the hair from one section high onto the top of the head, and loop through a small elastic to create a high bun. Repeat on the other side, and voila!

How to Style Your Little Boy’s Hair Like a Pro

At what age did your kid start asking to dress themselves? For many parents, that special moment comes earlier than you might think — and supporting your child as they develop their own sense of style is essential! If you have a son, you know that how their hair is styled is just as important to their self-expression as the shoes they wear and the superhero backpack they carry on the bus! Hair styling is an incredible opportunity for creativity and individuality. Encourage your son to embrace their magnificent mane, and you’ll be right beside them helping them to look their best from the classroom to the playground. Here are some tips and tricks on how to style your little boy’s hair like a pro.

      For Boys With Curly Hair

Curly hair is the ultimate feature, and each head of curly hair is beautifully unique and expressive! Encourage your son to embrace his hair’s natural texture, and help him keep his hair moisturized and de-tangled through a few easy steps.

The best way to preserve incredible curls is to develop a consistent washing and conditioning routine. Curly hair does not need to be washed every day! In fact, you should only wash curly hair every three to four days to allow a healthy build-up of natural oils. Here are a few steps to help you wash and style short and curly hair.

      Step 1: Shampoo

Begin your hair care with a hydrating curly hair shampoo. SoCozy Curl Shampoo Ultra Hydrating Cleanser is a great, gentle option that cleans while maintaining moisture. Gently massage into hair and create a lather, then rinse.

      Step 2: Condition

Apply conditioner to freshly shampooed hair. Distribute evenly and gently finger-comb the conditioner into hair. SoCozy Ultra Hydrating Curl Conditioner  is the perfect conditioning product for soft and shiny curls. It uses natural ingredients like mango seed butter and papaya extract for its ultra-hydrating formula.

      Step 3: Comb

To de-tangle, use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers and gently comb through the conditioned hair, starting at the bottom and working your way up to the top of the head. Remember to never brush your curly kid’s hair — finger-combing or a wide-toothed comb is the way to go!

      Step 4: Rinse

Gently rinse out the conditioner. For extra hydration, do a quick rinse and leave in a small amount of the conditioner to lock in lasting moisture.

      Step 5: Dry and style

Wring dripping water out of the hair and gently blot away excess water with a towel. Part the hair and apply a dime-size amount of styling cream or mousse (SoCozy Curl Volumizing Foam is a great option). Then, gently scrunch the hair from tip to roots.  Let air dry.

      For Boys With Straight Hair

Straight hair isn’t always straight-forward. Too often, a lack of good hair care can leave your son in tangles and tears. Regular washing and combing is essential to well-kept locks. Whether your son prefers an air-dried look or likes to be slicked-back in style, here’s how to help get great straight hair from bath time to play time.

      Step 1: Shampoo and condition

Boys can get themselves into all sorts of messes during the day — help to wash away the grime with a gentle shampoo and conditioner. If your kid is resistant to bath time, SoCozy's 3-in-1 is the perfect kid friendly product. It’s a body wash, shampoo, and conditioner all in one! Blink twice and the washing is done, streamlined in one great-smelling product. Plus, its natural formula features plant extracts for a silky shine.

      Step 2: Dry and de-tangle

For low-maintenance kiddos, it might be enough to simply lather, rinse, and air-dry. However, tangled hair requires a little extra TLC. So Cozy’s Detangler & Leave-in Conditioner effortlessly de-tangles, and infuses hair with much-needed moisture. Spray generously over damp hair, then work in with a wide-toothed comb from the bottom of the hair up towards the roots.

      Step 3: Style

A bad hair day might be the result of your son, quite literally, waking up on the wrong side of the bed!  So Cozy’s Detangler & Leave-in Conditioner also works great on dry hair — mist over dry hair to help calm frizz and maintain a lasting shine. For a slicked-back look, apply the leave-in conditioner and comb starting at the top of the forehead towards the back of the head.

      For Boys With Long Hair

For boys with long hair, the possibilities are lengthy. Encourage your long-haired little one to express themselves and let their personality shine through their hairstyles — from “boy buns” to braids!

For the times when they choose to keep their hair down and flowing, here’s a great styling technique to give their hair volume, moisture, and shine: use a mousse! SoCozy’s Sensitive Hair Styling Foam is a lightweight mousse that adds softness and bounce. This product is great for sensitive scalps, as it contains natural ingredients and won’t cause build-up or dryness. Apply evenly through damp hair, then slick back for a cool style, or scrunch up for flowing volume!

With these fast and easy hair routines, your little boy will soon view hair styling as a fun and exciting part of their morning. Your son can be stylish from toe to head, with salon-quality hair that’s as awesome and unique as they are.

What Is The Best Shampoo and Conditioner for Kids?

You’re raising your kid to have a good head on their shoulders — make sure they also maintain a great head of hair! Keeping your kid’s hair clean isn’t always easy, especially when playtime and bedtime could amount to tangles, dirt, and dandruff. Finding the right hair care routine is so important for keeping your kiddo’s hair happy and healthy. A great shampoo and conditioner is the perfect place to start! Here’s everything you need to know to find the best shampoo and conditioner for your kid.

When it comes to children’s hair care, fun shampoo scents and colorful conditioner bottles abound. However, toxic chemicals and faulty hair formulas can be just as common. Make sure your kid’s hair care is safe, natural, and effective. Here are a few key qualities to look out for when choosing your kid’s shampoo and conditioner.

      Cleansing and moisturizing

It goes without saying that shampoo should be cleansing, but the cleaning agents in many kid’s shampoos are too harsh. This strips away the hair’s natural oils, and can lead to a dry scalp, dull hair, and dandruff. It’s important to make sure that your shampoo is also hydrating, so look for shampoos that feature a high-moisture formula. Similarly, you should look for a clean and natural conditioner that will moisturize without adding grease or build-up.

      No harsh chemicals or toxins

Many kids’ shampoos and conditioners feature the same harmful chemicals as adult hair products —  including parabens, sulfates, and even formaldehyde. Colorful kid’s products may also feature harmful dyes and synthetic colors. Be sure to take a close look at the ingredients in your kid’s products, and look for paraben and sulfate-free products.

      Natural ingredients

Natural, plant-based ingredients are always the best and safest option for your kid’s hair care. Many natural ingredients feature wonderful benefits — for example, kiwi extract features hair-strengthening zinc, and mango seed butter is great for hydrating and conditioning.

SoCozy has an incredible line of safe and natural hair care. The great-smelling, salon-quality formula makes finding an awesome shampoo and conditioner easy. How Does Lice Shampoo & Spray Work

As a parent, there’s nothing better than watching your kid make new friends...until your little one picks up head lice on the playground. Then it’s all hands on deck to get rid of those pesky little buggers.  Head lice can be very tricky to avoid, especially among children and toddlers. While the best lice prevention method is to avoid head-to-head contact, this is not always possible with active kids on the move. If your child does pick up lice at school or the playground, there are many over-the-counter treatment shampoos that can help to eradicate the pests. While these treatments can be effective, many of them contain strong chemicals. Fortunately, there are safe and natural lice prevention sprays and shampoos that can help to keep lice away entirely. Many plant-based ingredients serve as lice-repellents, providing a form of chemical-free lice prevention.

How do lice sprays and shampoos work?

First, it’s important to distinguish between lice prevention products and lice treatment products. Lice ‘scaring’ shampoos and sprays do not get rid of existing lice but are designed to prevent lice, using natural lice repellents such as peppermint and tea tree oil. Most of these products are non-toxic, and can be purchased anywhere.  Lice treatment shampoos, on the other hand, use pediculicides (lice-killing medicine) to treat existing lice. These treatments can be over-the-counter or prescription shampoos, such as Nix, that use active ingredients like permethrin to kill the lice. If you or your child develops lice, it’s best to speak with your doctor to find the best treatment plan for your family. We get a lot of questions from curious parents about the best ways to keep lice away. Here is some of our go-to advice on what to do if head lice creep their way into your home.

      Frequently Asked Questions:

Can you use lice shampoo two days in a row?

Any over the counter or prescription lice shampoo should be used as directed, and most lice shampoos that contain active ingredients advise against multiple uses. Lice medicine can sometimes take multiple days to take effect, so it’s best to consult your healthcare provider before reusing the treatment.  However, many lice-preventing products, like So Cozy’s Boo! Lice Scaring Shampoo, are made to be used as your any-day-of-the-week go-to shampoo.  So Cozy’s Lice Scaring shampoo is a natural product that cleans and cares for hair while also preventing lice, making it safe and effective for daily use.

Does lice shampoo kill lice and eggs?

The active ingredients present in the lice treatment determine how effectively the shampoo can kill lice and eggs. In order to kill the lice, the lice shampoo must contain pediculicides. However, not all lice-killing medicines kill pre-hatched lice eggs (known as nits). To kill both lice and nits, the lice shampoo must also be strongly ovicidal, meaning it kills louse eggs.

      Will lice shampoo kill fleas?

While lice and fleas do have some similarities, lice shampoo is not guaranteed to be an effective flea treatment. Flea shampoo is recommended for the best treatment of fleas in hair.

Does lice shampoo fade hair color?

Like with all shampoos, hair color is likely to fade upon washing if your hair has been dyed recently. However, most lice shampoos are unlikely to fade hair color because they are meant to be used only once.

      Can lice shampoo cause dandruff?

There is no studied correlation between lice shampoo and dandruff. However, it is possible that a lice shampoo with active ingredients could cause scalp irritation or dryness that may lead to dandruff. This can be remedied with a dandruff shampoo.

      Can toddlers use lice shampoo?

Some over-the-counter lice shampoos are approved for children as young as two months old. However, some lice treatments, such as A-200, are only approved for children 2 years and older. With any lice treatment, it is important to take notice of age recommendations.
